Standard precautions which help the health workers to protect them in hospital, clinic, laboratory, and research work with microorganisms.

Safety measures are required for healthy life health workers.

Standard safety rules

Include the following steps;

  1. Personal Protective clothing (PPC)
  2. Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  3. General Protection (GP)
  4. Gloves

Their are three types of gloves;

  1. Disposable vinyl gloves; in all patient care area
  2. Latex surgical gloves; for operative procedure
  3. Heavy duty thick gloves; For waste handlers carry waste material
  4. Masks
  5. Aprons
  6. Personal Protective Equipments
  7. Footwear; Gumboot for waste handlers
  8. Eye shield; To protect eye enter from liquid/blood
  9. Apron
  10. Gown; when caring for client, to prevent spread of infection
  11. Mask; Used prevent the spread of microorganisms from client through respiratory track.
  12. Gloves
  13. General Protection
  14. Hand washing facilities
  15. Drinking water
  16. Immunization
  17. Maintenance of health record

Universal Precautions or Standard safety Rules

  1. Disposable injection (single use)
  2. Discard contaminated sharps
  3. Respiratory hygiene
  4. Hand hygiene
  5. Environment cleaning
  6. Wear protective barriers
  7. Patient care equipment
  8. Disinfect instruments
  9. Handle soiled linen correctly
  10. Discard the gloves after use
  11. Prevention needle stick injury
  12. Don’t recap the needle
  13. Discard the waste according to colour code dustbin
  14. Clean the area with Disinfectant
  15. Identify the possible infected area
  16. Wash hand thoroughly
  17. Wash clothes in hot water
  18. Wear PPE

Nurses Role in Standard Safety Precautions

  1. Handle equipment soiled with blood, body fluids, secretions and excretions.
  2. Prevent skin and mucus membrane exposure, contaminated of clothing and transfer of pathogens to other patient or environment.
  3. Clean, disinfect and reprocess usable equipment appropriately before use with another patient.
