6 Levels of Structural Organization of the Human Body
In the human body life processes are maintained at several levels of structural organization.
Read here human body parts name and vital organs of the human body.
These include six levels from smallest to largest –
1. Chemical Level
2. Cellular Level
3. Tissue Level
4. Organ Level
5. System Level
6. Organism Level
Structural Levels of Organization in Human Body
1. Chemical Level (Atoms, Molecules, and Compounds)
Chemical Level is the lowest level of structural organization of the human body.
The chemical level includes all those atoms and molecules that are essential for maintaining life.
There are certain atoms such as C, O, H, N, Ca, Na, and K that are essential for maintaining life or survival of life.
Atoms are combined to form molecules, for example – O2, H2O, CO2.
2. Cellular Level
The next level of organization is the cellular level. Molecules are combined to form cellular structures.
The cell is the smallest basic structural and functional unit of living organisms. Cells are the smallest, independent units of life. It helps in growth, metabolism, irritability, and reproduction.
3. Tissue Level
The next organization level is the tissue level. Tissues are groups of similar cells that work together to accomplish a specific function.
There are four basic types of tissue in the body are –
1. Epithelial tissue
2. Connective tissue
3. Muscle tissue
4. Nervous Tissue
4. Organ Level
An organ level of organization is the integration of two or more kinds of tissues that work together to perform a specific function.
At the organ level usually have recognizable shapes.
For example; Liver, Stomach, Bladder, etc.
The urinary bladder consists of an inner lining of epithelial tissue, an outer layer bound by various connective tissues to muscles (smooth muscle).
5. System Level
The system-level organization is a group of organs that act together to perform a specific kind of major function.
Organs that work together are grouped into organ systems.
For example; Endocrine system, Digestive system, Respiratory system, etc.
6. Organism Level
Organism level is the highest level of organization.
The human organism is the complex structure of the organ system. All systems are mutually dependent on one another to execute the function.
An organism is any living things that are considered as a whole, whether composed of one cell.
